Meet the Coaches:
Monique Bender: Monique Bender is returning for her 5th season with RSST. She started competitive swimming at age 6 and continued through high school. She reconnected with swimming when her children expressed an interest in the sport. Coach Monique started her coaching career as a pre-team coach of 6 year olds in Montgomery County. Over the next few years, Coach Monique worked for a winter swim club in Montgomery County instructing stroke clinic, swim lessons, and competitive team. She took this time to get her certifications to become a Swim America lesson instructor and then later, Site Supervisor. During that time she became an American Swimming Coaches Assoc. Level II coach and is currently working on Level III certification. Currently, in the winter season, Monique coaches locally with the Health Unlimited Hurricanes and is also a substitute teacher for Frederick County Public School.
Kevin Shaughness: Coach Kevin has been involved in many aspects of swimming for over forty years. After being a four-time high school All-American swimmer at Loyola Blakefield High School and a successful swimmer at University of Richmond, Kevin naturally progressed his love for the sport into coaching and officiating. He started coaching in the CMSL at Forest Hill and was a founding coach of the Castaways Swim Club. While coaching the JV and Varsity squads at Mt. St. Joe High School, the team was six-time MSA "B" Conference Champions. He was an active parent serving as a league official for Montgomery County and the Central Maryland Swim League for nine years during his daughter's summer swim team experiences. Most recently, Kevin was a mini's coach at Green Terror Aquatic Club in Westminster. He brings a very energetic approach to the pool and loves passing on his swimming knowledge.
